The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.” (1 Timothy 1:5 NLT)

I’ve been greatly encouraged to hear how many of our church have taken time to read 1st Samuel. I enjoyed it so much I finished a bit early and dove into 1st Timothy - a short letter written approximately AD 63—66 by the Apostle Paul to a young leader named Timothy.

As I read, I was struck with how clear it was that the outcome of “godly” doctrine and teaching was a life of love, modelled perfectly by Jesus.

Paul made it clear that he was hearing of many leaders who were promoting themselves as “teachers of the law [of Moses]” but actually had no understanding of the true meaning of God’s laws. Their lack of understanding was leading them into vain discussions and away from the one thing that flavoured all true teaching - love.

Paul doesn’t dismiss God’s truths as unimportant but makes it clear that the purpose of godly teaching is that disciples of Jesus would have, “A pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith”, that led them to be filled with the love of Christ.

As we review the year gone and pray for the one to come, I want to remind us and inspire us that our measurement of success as a church is the level of Christ-like love we all carry within us.

In the year to come, may we all be able to say that we have further developed:

A pure heart.
A clear conscience.
A genuine faith.

And may our lives be filled with love for God and those he has placed around us.

Cheers, God Bless and see you Sunday!
